Cult garage rock trio Dead Moon came from Portland. The band was founded in 1987 by Toody Cole and her husband Fred Cole. Over the course of their career, they released more than ten studio albums, several live records, and a number of compilations before disbanding in 2006. Dead Moon recorded all of their albums live, in mono, with virtually no overdubs or studio polishing. They were true DIY pioneers, releasing music on their own label, with around 90% of their album artwork printed in black and white. They had no interest in marketing—they simply played garage rock exactly the way Fred and Toody envisioned it: raw, direct, and stripped to the essentials. That authenticity is what made them so special and secured their place as one of the most unique bands in rock history. It's no surprise that countless bands from the 1990s—including Nirvana, The Dirtbombs, and The White Stripes—have cited Dead Moon as one of the defining influences on garage rock. After Dead Moon ended, Fred and Toody formed Pierced Arrows in 2007 together with drummer Kelly Halliburton. The band released two albums and several singles. Today, with both Fred Cole (vocals/guitar) and Andrew Loomis (drums) no longer with us, Toody launched Toody Cole and Her Band in 2023 to keep the music alive. Joining her are Kelly Halliburton from the Pierced Arrows days and Christopher March, guitarist for Jenny Don't & The Spurs. Their set features classic Dead Moon songs alongside selections from Pierced Arrows, The Rats, and Lollipop Shoppe—the bands Fred Cole led before Dead Moon (Toody also played bass in The Rats). Toody Cole and Her Band and Jenny Don't & The Spurs will tour Europe this summer, with their Belgrade show taking place on Sunday, November 29, at Zappa Baza.
